Cherry blossoms usually reach full bloom in Tokyo in late March and in Kyoto in the first week of April, but each year shifts by a few days depending on winter temperatures.
Plan for flexibility. We recommend booking a seven-day itinerary that includes both Tokyo and Kyoto, which gives you two chances to catch the peak bloom.
Go early in the morning to parks like Ueno, Maruyama and Philosopher’s Path. Crowds are lighter, the light is softer and the petals are most vivid.
Book accommodation and flights at least three to four months ahead. Sakura is the busiest season in Japan and good hotels sell out quickly.
